Details:
- What is Broadband?
Broadband refers to services that provide high-speed
communications, usually to access the Internet. There
is no common definition of broadband, but typically, when
people talk about 'broadband', they mean a service that
provides:
Faster Speed - a connection to the internet capable of
data transfer rates of at least 500Kbps - this is 10 times
the speed of a 'normal' dial-up connection.
Always On Connection - you do not 'dial up' to make a
connection to the internet. A broadband connection is
like your electricity or water supply.
Flat Rate Charge - you pay a monthly subscription and
are connected to the internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week, 365 days a year.
-
What is ADSL broadband?
ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. It
transforms standard telephone lines into high-speed digital
lines. It is called 'asymmetric' because it moves data
more quickly in one direction than the other. This makes
it particularly suitable for internet connections where
you normally receive more data than you send. ADSL broadband
is ideally suited for surfing the web, downloading files,
receiving streaming media and working from home over corporate
intranets.
-
How does ADSL broadband work?
ADSL broadband operates over standard telephone lines.
The broadband signal is carried by two modems - one in
your home or office and the other in the telephone exchange.
The modems use the capabilities of the copper line to
achieve much higher data transfer rates. A microfilter
separates the voice signal from the broadband signal so
phone calls can be made at the same time as a connection
to the internet.
-
What can ADSL Broadband be used for?
ADSL broadband's higher data transfer rate has the potential
to improve access to existing online services:
Internet access - the higher speeds available with ADSL
broadband make it practical for web sites to carry more
feature-rich information. The virtually instant downloading
of internet pages significantly enhances your online experience,
items such as embedded video clips, animations, high quality
audio clips, online presentations, internet radio and TV
stations all come alive with a broadband connection.
Intranet access - fast access to a corporate network makes
teleworking a realistic proposition for businesses as well
as their employees. Being able to connect to your office
whilst not having to physically be there has proven to be
of benefit to many organisations and individuals.
-
Can I use the telephone whilst the computer is connected
to the internet?
Yes - both voice and data can be transmitted over a single
telephone line at the same time without interference in
either direction.
-
Is ADSL Broadband safe?
ADSL Broadband is no different than using any other method
to connect to the internet. As with any internet connection
we recommend the use of a firewall to prevent unwanted
access to your PC / network.
-
What does the term "Contention Ratio" mean?
The contention ratio indicates the maximum number of
users you may share the same connection to the internet
with. This ratio depends on the broadband package you
subscribe to and are irrespective of who the supplier
is. Broadband Quest's packages are available with two
contention ratio's. 50:1 for the Home Packages and 20:1
for the Office Packages. These are industry standards.
-
Can I have a fixed IP address?
As with all methods of connecting to the internet, it
is possible for Broadband Quest to supply a fixed IP address
for your internet connection. However, unless access to
your network from the internet is required, we would advise
against this.
